Do You Have #PMS Most Of The Month?

Could it be PMDD or Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder?

Most women have some degree of PMS around menstruation but it is reckoned that about 5% have symptoms practically the whole month. That used to be me actually when I was in my twenties. Ugh.  You basically get one week clear in the month but the rest of the time you can get myriad physical and behavioural symptoms, particularly anxiety and depressed mood and that can have a real affect on your life and your relationship, I can tell you!

This is actually known now as PMDD or premenstrual dysphoric disorder. PMDD is a severe form of PMS which is classified as a mood disorder and characterized by symptoms that are thought to be caused by disruption of the serotonin system, although the exact cause is unknown. PMDD differs from classic depressive conditions because the symptoms generally stop for at least one week of the month. However, the drug of choice for PMDD continue is still anti-depressant SSRIs like Seroxat etc.

In a paper in the journal Human Pschycopharmacology a natural molecule known as myo-inositol has been shown to have a positive effect on women with PMDD. This could be due to the fact that myo-inositol is the secondary messenger of serotonin.

The results showed that women taking myo-inositol had significant improvements in symptoms as measured by three different scales: a reduction in the Daily Symptoms Records scale, an improvement of the Hamilton Depression Rating and in the Clinical Global Impression—Severity of Illness scales.

The amount used in the trial in one of the formulations was 2g of myo-inositol in powder. This product has that amount with some useful usual PMS nutrients such as magnesium and B6 too. Might be worth a look – and could save your relationship. I remember years ago in the shop we had a chap bring us a massive bouquet of flowers for helping his wife calm her violent PMS! Let’s hope this message has the same effect for someone! Thankfully, I no longer have this problem and don’t need it 🙂
